Ejection Energy Calculator

Estimate projectile speed and impact energy for common machine tool ejection scenarios.

Important engineering notice

This calculator provides screening estimates of potential ejection energy for selected machine-tool scenarios using calculation principles reflected in relevant Type-C standards.

It does not certify guarding, prove conformity, determine whether a machine is safe to use, assess retained vision-panel impact resistance, or replace manufacturer information, applicable requirements, competent engineering judgement, or a suitable and sufficient risk assessment.

The user is responsible for checking the applicability of the calculator and verifying all inputs, assumptions and results before relying on the output.

Select a calculation

Inputs
mm
rpm
kg

Mass of the ejected projectile, as supplied or measured.

Default for chuck jaw ejection. This increases the calculated peripheral speed by 25 % before calculating impact energy.

rpm

Use only where the spindle speed is physically, mechanically or control limited, or where the fitted work holding device is permanently marked with a lower maximum permitted speed.

Formula C.1 (BS EN ISO 23125)

Jc = ½ × m × (1,25 × v)², with v = π × d × n / 60. The 25 % impact speed uplift accounts for the radial loosening of the chuck jaw during ejection. d in metres, n in rpm, m in kilograms.
